The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that governs college athletics in the United States and Canada. 

Purpose

The NCAA's mission is to promote the best interests of student-athletes, including their education and athletics participation. The NCAA also aims to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educational experience.

Structure

The NCAA is made up of institutions, conferences, organizations, and individuals. It has three divisions: Division I, Division II, and Division III.

Responsibilities

The NCAA: 

  • Regulates student athletics 
  • Organizes athletic programs 
  • Accredits college athletics 
  • Enforces rules 
  • Regulates live televised coverage of college football 
  • Promotes fair and safe competition

Eligibility

To be eligible to play college sports, students must: 

  • Apply for the NCAA 
  • Be cleared through the Eligibility Clearing House 
  • Complete at least 16 core courses in high school 
  • Earn a qualifying SAT or ACT test score 
  • Maintain full-time status 
  • Fulfill credit requirements 
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0
